Contextual Approach

Scene 1 :- Joceyln woke up from her sleep after a  terrible nightmare.

Productive lighting is the significant of cinematography. Often referred to as painting with light, the art requires
technical knowledge of film stocks, lighting instruments, color, and difusion filters, and understanding of their
underlying concepts such as :-

      *exposure

      *colortheory

      *optics.

They  must make a two-dimensional image so that the frame projected on a screen will appear 3D. Lighting is the primary tool used to perform this so called “magic.” To create a convincing three-dimensional

image, the subjects and layers ofthe scene must be separated from each other. This is accomplished with light or color, creating contrasts of light against dark or dark againstlight, and by strategic placement of lights and color elements. The cinematographer ( Hui yu & Jun ) must consider how lightfalls on and around (Jocelyn), how colors bounce on objects and reflect onto faces, and where the highlights and shadows are. Several factors influence lighting style :- The director’s needs, The story, The budget, The experience and Artistic vision of the all whom ware involved in this video, lenses and lighting equipment, and lastly of course the film’s sensitivity. Lighting philosophies used are Naturalism & Pictorialsim. For an example, the second and third pictue were emphasized on the subject matters of that scene where by Jocelyn got up uncormfortablely by the night stand where her clock shows the time of the incident. The third one is where she takes her medication to calm her self.

In my oppinion, the first picture had gone wrong ! Why ? Because that was the main expression that should be focused on (light towards the face & hand ) and the background should be darken. The mistake wwas that Jun focused on the background instaed of her face. As she gets up, she was litterally gasping/breathing heavily based on the nightmare and of course her hand will be trembling. Or in addition, she could give expression like her body was vibrating in fear. In this case, they should play well on the basic lighting skills which is the Low-key & High-key. Below are the example of method on how to make a better lighting while shooting videos or taking photos for Noir.

This videon explain much on how we should perform and learn :)

Scene 2 : Jocelyn got up from her bed to take her shower and continued with her daily routine

We have used film noir and neo-noir conventions of having the femme fatale being a very dominant and strong women (Jocelyn). However we have developed conventions by having her looking in the mirror showing two of her. This helps show her power.

This is another example to create dimension trough light as well creating a pose. It is explained with examples given ..

Composition or arrangement, is one of the key aspects of the cinematographer’s craft disticnt from the subject of a work. Many cinematographers who worked in film noir adapted this compositional technique. As you can see, Joceyln got up using one of the foot then the second. Decentering composition also can be done through shadow, not just a question of balance. Well, of course they have the rules for composition which is known as The rule of third. Its the choice of the cinematographer to choose either horizontal or vertical format. In the picture above, Jun and Hui Ryu were figuring out on how they should focuse the foot as the main object so that it will create a motion. Motion in the sense of the flow of the picture and how does it feel. The video below was used as an example and guide for us.

Types of composition applied to the picture below !!

Personal Oppinion

Before considering what should befocused on, there are couple of technique that should be followed to enhance our skill in photography or movie taking. Are you wondering what it is? It is simple as this:- Be quick, Move in close, Compare with care, Be selective, Focuse on your subject matter, Experiment intime, Look at the light, Watch the weather, Keep it simple and lastly be bold ! Ammusement or Theatrical lighting is used to Enhance the scene. The lighting should pull all the aspects of the stage together. It is not just enough to brighten the actors, set, costumes and props, the lighting should allow the whole piece to be hold properly and supported. For example, parts of a set may need to be controlled, or certain props and costumes may need to be enhanced, and the actors must be seen in a proper relationship to their background and surroundings. Therefore, all objects that appear on the stage needs to be in balance and the light should focus in on the picture that needs to convey the sense and feeling to what the audience is viewing. The lighting should NOT, distract or be non-supportive to a scene. Only unless that is the purpose the director(Hui yu)  wants to achieve.

KEY NOTE: The lighting should extract all the elements of the stage or what ever other venue together !!!!

14 Composition Techniques that Will Improve Your Photos :-

Understanding composition is something that everyone will take time to do. Without the need to invest in any expensive equipment, appreciating the elements of good composition will undoubtedly enhance your photographic work. Developing your photographic eye is something that comes naturally to some, but for others, it takes time and effort to sharpen your visual skills and abilities as a photographer. First. never try to be perfect, keep it as simple as possible, using Rules of Third, Landscape composition, Lines within an image ( vertical, horizontal or curves ), Influence of the shapes, contrast within the subject matters, Framing (a subject effectively is the basis of strong composition), Negative & Positive space, Angle which is shooting form. Layering, exploitation of symmetry and pattern, cropping and lastlt of course the ammount of pactise and effort which is being put in.

Moreover, I think another way to shoot our video is by taking shot by shot. It means when we relocate the camera from a diferent angle during shooting, the lights must be moved as well so that the subject is always shot in a proper lighting. My group and I was thinking what are we going to achieve and what technique are we going to use to make this a succecful piece of ours?? On the assumption that every technique will have a unique and predicable effect on the audience. It is true that shadows are moody while flat lighting makes a scene moodless (not the same as happy), the effects do sometimes overlap.Similarly, lighting from the bottom used to be only for male villains in film noir — now it is one of the most glamorous techniques known (when done with soft light). I thought of getting this technique applied when Jocelyn is lecturing. It pays all the attention towards her.

Besides that, adding non realistic scene as one of the effect will give much of an attention and interest towards the video from the viewers point. Or maybe something which is not being expected or guessed from the viewer. For an example, our story goes like this, after Jocelyn takes her shower and open her room door, the scene will then change to her student opening the door while she was lecturing.I find this scene abit common in movie industry. As a design student, making that scene even more extraordianry will be excellent/ skillful . So , I thought it will be great if Jocelyn plays a role where she is walking into the wall without or with realisation , and here comes the student from the wall with a very bright lighting background . This makes the viewer to think in confussion as it interpret in a way. For example, they will be wondering how is it possibe for someone to walk trought the wall or come trough it, how they even made that scene. This shows the quality and hard work that has been put in for the video.

The picture besides shows the effect on how the soul is coming out from the body. Well, I thought of putting this effect when the followers join the cult to remove their sins or bad memories. Believing the fact that the soul will reborn/rebirth once its being cleanse. Why this effect? It plays around with the viewers psychology accepting that the soul is actually coming  out from the body. And give an impression of 'WOW'. This phenomena literally put the scene together and draws attention, I think so.
